The rare barbastelle bat has been discovered in London for the first time in over 50 years. The bat was recorded in Hainault Forest Country Park, in Redbridge.
Barbastelles roost in the crevices of mature trees, often in areas of ancient woodland. Its breeding roosts are only found in a few locations. Redbridge is one of London’s greenest boroughs and has received support from the Heritage Lottery Fund to manage the forest for wildlife.
